A King and A Jack

...walk into a bar.

Eh, it is never any fun when it is just two guys at the bar. Still have to wait in line for drinks. If it is crowded, you are lucky if you don't lose your friend. And if the King happens to find a Queen- the Jack get screwed. (eh, maybe the other way around).

Wait, what am I talking about...

I am talking about playing dominated hands. When I use the term dominated, I am referring to the situation in which you are playing a hand that can easily make the second best 1 or 2 pair hand.

Hands like QJ, KQ, QT, AT, AJ, an etc. are all dominated by there counterparts.

Now, in a game as positional as NLHE, we can use position to extract profit from dominated hands while trying to keep the hands that have us dominated at bay.

Regardless, playing any of the dominated hands out-of-position is not easy. What happens when we flop top-pair with JT? In our raised pot, we continuation bet most of the time. If get played back at, we cannot move on without a dead read. It even becomes worse when they just call and we are forced to check/evaluate one or two more streets, in general. (We should be making out decisions on the turn, imo)

I think situations similar to the one above are huge leaks in many players games because the player with the weaker hand will generally be inclined to call value bets by better hands.

Well, what if we have position? Then everything changes and we can do almost whatever we want. When we have QJ on the button and someone raises in early or middle position, we have the advantage of calling and evaluating our opponents hand strengths. When we have an idea on how broad of a range any particular player can have, we can start to playback at them appropriately.

Granted, I had a good read on this opponent, this is a example of how this can be applied.

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $0.10/$0.25 Blinds - 6 Players - (LegoPoker Hand History Converter)

SB: $40.15
BB: $8.50
UTG: $25.90
MP: $75.90
CO: $25.00
Mo D (BTN): $24.55
Preflop: Mo D is dealt (6 Players)
UTG raises to $0.85, 2 folds, Mo D calls $0.85, 2 folds

Flop: ($2.05) (2 Players)

UTG bets $1.70, Mo D raises to $6.00, UTG folds

Uncalled bet of $4.30 returned to Mo D

Pot Size: $5.45 ($0.25 Rake)

Now, had we decided to 3bet this UTG raiser and he cold-calls. When the flop comes and he leads, we probably can't do this because his range raising UTG should be pretty tight and if he is calling 3bets OOP we can definitely subtract most of the hands from his range.

So, long in short, when you have position, it is often better to call instead of 3bet with dominated hands, even if they are suited. This is not to say, you should not mix up your game and confuse your opponents but learning to play your position will open up more lanes for you to expand your game. It will help you improve your hand reading skills because you will be able to showdown more often and you can take pots away at the proper times.

Why You are Weak

...written by Dr. Phil

Addiction: Part 3

Ah yes, the end of another week. It has been a good one for me. I have accomplished a lot in my online game, I am making more money than I ever have, and the new school semester is coming and I am ready to work on getting the "Dr." in the front of my name. (Do you think you can do graduate work on "Gambling Theory" LOL ). I only played 700 hands today, playing on Sundays can be frustrating because this is the day that most of the part-time regulars come out. I like playing against the donks better. Less Thinking.

Now this post has nothing to do with Dr. Phil, but I am using the top quote as a contrast to my point. I think the idea that people whom are afflicted with any form of addiction are not always just weak.

Granted, most of those whom develop these addictions, started the motion themselves, in my opinion. Those whom come from a alcoholic bloodline and still choose to binge are only going to pass the same gene through the family tree. Those who die from the tobacco, only have themselves to blame, especially the past two generations with all the prolific propaganda that emphasized the dangers of the substance.

To say, "Just stop drinking" sounds easy if you haven't been boozing daily for 4 years. If you have never had to regularly take pain killers, you will not know what it is like for those whom are dependant.

For those with the right body chemistry, addiction and dependence can easily be onset. There are also those people who can regulate there actions. I know many people, including myself, who can get drunk everyday January and have no problem stopping February. I stopped smoking cigarettes at the age of 20. I started when I was 15 and I had absolutely no problem quiting, weird right?

Not really, as I mentioned, many people do not inherit a genome that will leave one predisposed to dependence/addiction. That is not to say that one can not be developed. For example, my bloodline is all Muslim, I think my family can easily go back 4 generations without consumption of alcohol. If I decide that I want to start drinking everyday, it is quite possible I will develop a disorder myself, one that will be passed on.

Lemme see, I am not dependant on anything. I stay away from caffeine as much as possible, I don't smoke tobacco, and I quit smoking crack about a year ago.

Addiction, for me, is music. That is the only thing that I know that I cannot live without. Whether it is Hip-Hop and R&B to Classical Rock and Bluegrass/Jazz/Funk combinations (i.e Dave Matthews, Stevie), music is my addiction.

Finally, my point- Think about every action you make everyday. Ask yourself, "Why am I doing this?" and "Am I hurting myself or others?". Thinking in this manner, I believe, will help many of my readers to realize that they are not addicted or dependant to anything. I call this "pseudo-addiction", one that is manifested by your mind or mood, as opposed to physical chemistry. An excuse to perform unhealthy or irrational actions. Strictly mental. If you cannot get a grasp on this part of your life, playing poker professionally and profitable will be impossible.

Really Quick

Just Something To Glance At....

Addiction

Part 2:

I am continuing with my prose on my thoughts on addiction. One of the biggest problems, in global society, is the human beings ability to develop a dependence or reliance on a substance or activity. This is not always a negative aspect of our natural mental chemistry, but, when it is manifested in the form of drugs, gambling and sexual abnormality, it becomes much more prevalent.

Many of those who believe they are addicts, do not know the true definition of the ailment. True addiction is embodied in those whom perform particular actions regardless of the consequence.

Whereas, there are those whose body undergo physical chemical changes that lead to a dependence on a substance. These substances can be your own body's natural endorphins. (Your natural drug system, in lamest terms)

Wow. Already, I need to check myself

[ ] Don't drink when I don't have too or have a reason too.

Sometimes, I justify getting wasted just for the fun of it. According to AA (reference a friend going through a DUI), binging is a sign of alcoholism. I can sleep without having a beer and go without drinking everyday.

[ ] Gambling: Well, I wish I had this problem. ( I might play some more hands. J.K)

I have not deposited a single dollar into a online account. I do not frequent casino's and I did not play a single casino game in Vegas. I mention gambling because many of us have found the way of "gambling" on a daily basis and still make more money than those who work 9-5.

[ ] Pills and other Drugs: Out of the question

[X] Exercise: Guilty.

I have to wake up and do a minimum of 40-50 push-ups in the morning along with a stretch of sit-ups. Cardio twice a week. I feel this is both physical and mental addiction because, mentally, I have to stay in shape and won't allow myself to slip. Physically, you will drive to get your "runner's high". Force, you body to jump into it's natural medicine cabinet.

[X] Music: Always have it on. Always want to hear more. I don't know what I would do without Hip-Hop. When I am stressed, there is nothing like putting on Aaliyah's smooth voice or listening to bluegrass/jazz/funk that sends chills through my skin.

I have been acquainted and known too many people that are in holes in a ditch now. Some of them forgotten forever but all of them too young to have died. Some from high-school, some childhood friends. There is no feeling like looking at a picture of someone knowing that you will never see them again. Whether they died from drugs or an addiction to the road and the thrill of speed and power.

I have also come across my fair share of degenerate gamblers: Who lie, cheat, and steal to achieve a self centered goal. These are not good people to be affiliated with. They will stab you in the back for a dollar. Make debts that they will never repay and most importantly, you cannot trust them. (Like anyone, right?)

The glorification of television poker has lead many to believe that the game is a cake-walk. You always win more than your lose and everything comes out sunny. Well, we all know that is not true. That is why we have PokerDynasty and other resources to control ourselves and make sure we are not looking at the poker as a game but as work.

I finish my point tomorrow.

Till then, I want everyone to think about future goals. Mine have never been nailed in wood. I have spent too much time in college not to finish. I think I have finally decided what I want to pursue for my degree choice.

Music, Booze and Gambling

...are you addicted to any of the above?
Keep that question in mind...
Once again, Idleness has engulfed my life. For many I know, this is a life-long dream. No 9-5, No Boss, and, most importantly, no mandatory sleep schedule.
Life can be easy and fun living this. But I am not happy with just easy and the small luxuries, I'm trying to live and live to fullest.
Occasionally, I have to remind myself that sitting in front of my Dell for 2 hours and making $30-40 a hour is paramount to sitting in the Scion, delivering beef.
I am happy with my life now. I have new found drive to succeed, poker is making me money on the side and is going extremely well, and I am my check-list of "to-do's" is dwindling down to the goals that take extra drive and motivation.
Therefore, I must set a schedule for my "sessions" as I would have to follow a schedule for work.
Forcing myself to play two sessions, consisting of at least one-thousand hands, 5 days a week would be more than enough for me to reach 100NL and start making $70-80 an hour, and it doesn't even seem like a dream to me. It's on the calender, I just can't tell which date it falls on.
Moving back on to my question in the preface,
Many think that addiction lies in the form of tobacco, booze and casino's. Well, I believe addiction becomes manifested into those forms. A means of outlet, a steam valve one's body must release. Now, I have not actually conducted any research into this but I am a curious: At what point is one considered an addict?
Remember, we make our living off of degenerate gamblers, what seperates us from them?
I mentioned this because I want to hear from those who read my blog regularly on there idea of what addiction is and how it becomes symbolized in our society and our personal lives.
I think I know the answer, more on this tomorrow. AKA, tthis is possible doctorate theory.I got big dreams.

Worst Luck Ever

...with TVs, at least.

Those who have been to my house have seen all the broken televisions, vacuum cleaners and other assorted junk.

Well, I broke another TV. Something with the AV input on all my sets, due to switching components often, lead then to crap out.

Hopefully, I can avoid that with my new set up. I was watching TV on a 24' before this.
